To be able to follow the pattern, you will need to know the following:

– slip knot
– chain (ch)
– single crochet
– double crochet

All of these are covered in previous tutorials 🙂

Materials:

Acrylic or cotton yarn (of the same weight)
Crochet hook 7 (4.5 mm)
Scissors
Yarn needle
Tape measure

Abbreviations:

Chain – ch
Chain space – ch sp
Single crochet – sc
Double crochet – dc

Notes:

The pattern is written using US crochet terms and it is done in rows.
The chain 3 at the beginning of each row is counted as a double crochet

The pattern:

Chain 39, but do not tighten the chains, leave them a bit loose
R1: dc in 4th ch from the hook, dc in next 3 st, [ch 7, skip 7 st, dc in next 4 st] repeat until the end of the row, ch 3, turn
R2: skip the 1st st, dc in dc, [ch 7, skip 7 st, dc in dc] repeat until the end of the row
R3-46: repeat R2
The length of the headband after round 46 should be 49 cm (app. 19 inches). If your work is not this long, repeat R2 until you reach this length.

Braiding:
Starting with any of the chain spaces, we will braid the headband the following way:

Starting from R1, take the second chain and tuck it underneath the first one, then pull it tight to close the gap. Repeat this with all the remaining chains: take the next chain and tuck it underneath the current one, then pull tight to close the gap.

The result will be three braids, with the last chain sticking out.

R47: Skip the 1st stich, dc in next 3 st, sc in the ch sp, [dc in next 4 st, sc in the ch sp] repeat until the end of the row.

Bind off and cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sewing:

Turn the headband and fold the ends so the braids are on the inside. Sew the ends together, bind off, cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Now turn the headband, so the braids are again on the outside and you are all done!
