For this project you will need the following:
– a jar or another container per choice (round bottom)
– yarn suitable for crochet hook no. 4
– cca 30-40g for the main color
– cca 10g for the ending row (laced edge)
– crochet hook no.4
– sewing needle suitable for yarn
– scissors
Abbreviations:
Yar over – yo
Single crochet – sc
Halfdouble crochet – hdc
Double crochet – dc
Triple crochet – tc
Slip stitch – slst
Triple crochet
1. Yo 2 times, so you have total of 3 loops on the hook
2. Insert the hook into the stitch, yo and pull back so you have 4 loops on the hook
3. Yo, pull through 2 loops on the hook, yo, pull again through 2 loops on the hook, yo, and pull once again through the remaining 2 loops on the hook
DC decrease:
1. Yo, insert the hook into the stitch, yo, pull back the hook so you have 3 loops on it.
2. Yo again, insert the hook in the next stitch, yo and pull back the hook, so you have 5 loops on it.
3. Yo and pull through 4 loops at once, so you will have 2 loops remaining on your hook.
4. Yo and pull through the remaining 2 loops.
Special V stitch
1. Yo, so you have 2 loops on the hook.
2. Insert the hook into the stitch, yo and pull back the hook, so you have 3 loops on it.
3. Yo and pull through 2 loops, so you have 2 loops remaining on the hook.
4. Yo, insert the hook in the same stitch, yo and pull back the hook, so you have 4 loops on it.
5. Yo, pull through 2 loops, then yo again, and pull through the remaining 3 loops.
6. Chain 1.
7. Repeat steps 1 – 5 in the same stitch.
Important:
Ch1 and ch2 do not count as stitches. It means that we will work suitable stitch in that first stitch, where the chain is.
The pattern:
R1: Make 12 dc in the magic circle (ch3 counts as a dc!). Finish the round with slst in the top of the ch3.
R2: In each stitch from the previous round, starting with the first where you made ch3, make 2dc (24 dc at the end of the round).
R3: In the first stitch make only ch3, in the next make 2dc, then 1dc in the next, then 2 dc in the next – follow the pattern until the end of the round (36 dc).
Important: If the jar you chose has a wider bottom than the one I am using, keep enlarging the circle according to the pattern we learned in circle tutorial.
R4: Ch1, then make sc the whole round. Do not forget the last stitch, because ch1 doesn’t count as sc.
R5: Ch3, turn your work, and make dc in each stitch around. Finish with slst in the top of the ch3.
R6: Ch2, turn your work. Make hdc in each stitch around, including the stitch where you made ch2. Finish with slst in the first st (not ch2!).
R7: Ch1, turn your work. Make sc in each stitch around, finish with slst in the first stitch.
R8: Repeat R6.
R9 to the desired height: Repeat rows R5 – R8.
If your jar is narrowing at some part, like the one on the video, then repeat the rows until the narrowing part.
Decrease – I recommend that you do the decrease in the row with dc. If it happens that your decrease will be in the middle of the patter, feel free to do the decreasing row with dc, you will not lose anything.
After the decrease
R1 to the desired height: repeat rows R5 – R8
Your work should be as high as your jar, or to reach its edge. Then you will work the last, laced round.
Laced round:
The first special V stitch:
1. Ch2
2. Yo, insert the hook through the same stitch and pull back – you have 2 loops and the chain on the hook.
3. Yo, pull through 2 loops, then yo, and pull through the remaining loop and the chain.
4. Ch1.
5. Yo, so you have 2 loops on the hook.
6. Insert the hook through the same stitch, yo and pull back, so you have 3 loops on the hook.
7. Yo, pull through 2 loops, so you have 2 loops remaining on your hook.
8. Yo, insert the hook in the same stitch, yo, pull the hook back, so you have 4 loops on it.
9. Yo, pull through 2 loops on the hook, yo again and pull through the remaining 3 loops
Work slst in the next stitch, then special V stitch, slst, sp. V stitch… – follow the pattern until the end of the round.
Heart
Working in a magic circle make:
1. 1sc, 1hdc, 1dc, 1tc, 4 dc
2. Ch1
3. 1tc
4. Ch1
5. 4dc, 1tc, 1dc, 1hdc
Slst in the sc.
I recommend tying the yarn ends over the sc to strengthen the shape of the heart.
Chain:
Make a standard chain of desired length.
Finishing up:
Finish by lacing the chain through the row with dc, then tie the hearts to the ends and tie them any way you like.
Your little pen holder or a small vase is done!
