Welcome!
In this tutorial I will show you two variants of the Tunisian stitch. For this stitch you will need a crochet hook that is the length of a knitting needle because of the way this stitch is done. Two variants in the video are the basic and simplest ones. Still, they are an excellent basis for other kinds of the Tunisian stitch based on them.
Afghan stitch
The starting chain can have any number of chains. For the tutorial I chained 10. An important thing to know is that you need to follow the number of stitches – you should have the same number of stitches in every row, and it needs to be same as the number in the starting chain. Otherwise, your work will not be straight.
Step 1
Starting with the chain next to the one on the hook, insert hook through every chain, yarn over and pull back, leaving a loop on the hook.
We will repeat this until the end of the row. The number of loops on the hook needs to be same as the number of chains you made.
Step 2 – the stitch
Row 1: yarn over and pull the hook only through the first loop. Yarn over again and pull through 2 loops on your hook. Repeat this (yarn over, pull through 2 loops on the hook) until the end of the row, or until you have only one loop on your hook.
Your work will look “ribbed” – that is how it is supposed to look like (see the video).
Row 2: insert the hook behind the first rib (bar) you see next to the hook, yarn over and pull back the hook, leaving a loop on it. Repeat this until the end of the row – remember, you should have the same number of loops on the hook as you had stitches.
Row 3: repeat row 1. Reminder: yarn over and pull the hook only through the first loop, then yarn over and pull through 2 loops, until there is only 1 loop on your hook.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until the desired length.
Step 3 – finishing the work
The work is finished with slip stitch in the following way:
Insert the hook behind the rib (bar), yarn over and pull back through the rib and the loop on your hook. Repeat this until the end of the row.
Knitting with the crochet hook
Step 1 is the same as with the previous stitch (Afghan).
Step 2 – the stitch
Row 1: it is done in the same way as with the previous stitch, or:
yarn over and pull the hook only through the first loop. Yarn over again and pull through 2 loops on your hook. Repeat this (yarn over, pull through 2 loops on the hook) until the end of the row, or until you have only one loop on your hook.
Row 2: insert the hook in the middle of the rib (see the video), yarn over and pull back leaving a loop on your hook. Repeat this until the end of the row.
Row 3: repeat row 1.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until the desired length.
Step 3 – finishing the work
The work is finished with a slip stitch in the following way:
insert the hook through the middle of the rib, yarn over and pull back through both the rib and the loop on your hook. Repeat this until the end of the row.
